Case Study 1

Franchisee: Terry Iles
Territory: Swindon

Terry Iles was awarded the Swisher Swindon franchise territory in June 2002. He had been a supply supports specialist for a defence communications company for over 12 years.

Terry felt it was time to start his own business and he decided to go the franchising route - building a business with a tried and tested formula. As he says, "Why reinvent the wheel? If you want to start a pizza business you can start your own but how would you compete against an established name?" Having obtained funding through the bank, after an introduction from Swisher, he started his franchise with a Sales Executive, with Terry taking on the service management role himself.

Once Terry had joined the network, he received two weeks' classroom and on-territory training. "The initial training was ideal as is the on-going training when needed. The support is great as you can always get somebody on the telephone or meet with them if needs be." Terry is growing his business on target. His aims are to build a successful business from a standing start to £150,000 within two years. As Terry says "To build a business like this will give me a sense of achievement, sharing the success with a good team of staff. By running the business in accordance with the Swisher methodology ensures that it is both profitable and has a capital resale value."

Terry said "The decision to go it alone, after working for other people for 35 years, was a difficult decision to make. Taking on staff and ensuring that you have the right staff was also a challenge for me because it meant that I was risking my own money".

"If someone is thinking of buying their first franchise, prior to buying it study the market and compare what is out there. Be sure you have investigated it and satisfied yourself that you can do it and it is right for you. Look at your skills and match them to the opportunity. Do not think it is going to be easy. You will work long hours and to start with you will not get 4 weeks' holiday a year but you are not going to be alone, you are part of a network so don't panic. But also do not spend too much time thinking and planning. If you decide to do something, go out and do it."

In 2003, Terry Iles received the Quality Franchise of the Year Award at the Swisher Annual Conference.
